National Guard Troops Assist in Dozens of Arrests During D.C. Protest

National Guard troops, deployed under a recent presidential executive order, assisted D.C. Metropolitan Police in making over 50 arrests on the evening of August 13, 2025, after a protest near the White House turned disorderly. The demonstration, which began peacefully in Lafayette Square to protest the new executive order granting federal control over local law enforcement, saw some protesters clash with officers after being ordered to disperse. According to a D.C. Police spokesperson, the arrests were made for various offenses, including disorderly conduct and assault on a police officer. This marks the first major use of the National Guard to enforce public order in the nation's capital under the new federal directive, bypassing local authority. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, who had opposed the executive order, reiterated her concerns, stating that "the militarization of our streets will only escalate tensions." A National Guard spokesperson confirmed that their personnel were acting in a supporting role to D.C. police and that the situation was brought under control without further incident.
