Newsom Formally Demands Trump Withdraw National Guard from Los Angeles, Citing "Breach of State Sovereignty"

Sacramento, California – California Governor Gavin Newsom has delivered a sharp rebuke to the Trump administration, formally requesting the immediate withdrawal of National Guard troops deployed to Los Angeles amidst escalating anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) protests. Newsom, in an open letter to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, characterized the federal deployment as "unlawful" and a "serious breach of state sovereignty," asserting that California's local law enforcement agencies were fully capable of managing the situation. The governor, joined by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and former Vice President Kamala Harris, contends that the unsought federal intervention has, in fact, inflamed tensions rather than de-escalated them, drawing vital resources away from where they are genuinely needed. The Trump administration, however, maintains that the presence of the National Guard, with some 2,000 troops deployed, is essential to restore "law and order" and protect federal agents against what President Trump has described as "lawless riots."
