In a pivotal diplomatic exchange, President Donald Trump announced yesterday that he held a "very positive" 90-minute phone call with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, setting the stage for a potential resumption of stalled trade negotiations between the world's two largest economies. The conversation, the first publicly acknowledged contact between the two leaders since Trump’s return to office in January, focused almost entirely on trade and aimed to break the impasse over tariffs and crucial rare earth minerals. This development follows a period of escalating tensions and mutual accusations of violating a May 12 agreement reached in Geneva, which had temporarily reduced tariffs. While Trump expressed optimism about clarifying complexities surrounding rare earth products and hinted at a new trade deal, Chinese state media offered a more nuanced readout, with President Xi emphasizing the need to "steer clear of the various disturbances and disruptions" in the bilateral relationship. Both leaders exchanged invitations for reciprocal state visits, and teams from both nations are expected to meet "shortly" to continue discussions. Despite the newfound diplomatic overtures, analysts like Craig Singleton of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies caution that the call "simply paused escalation on trade" and "didn't resolve core tensions," reflecting the deep-seated strategic competition that continues to define US-China relations.
