Following reports of ongoing unrest, including instances of vehicle torching and tear gas deployment by security forces, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) acted to clear the streets. This comes as California Governor Gavin Newsom formally requested the immediate withdrawal of National Guard troops deployed by the Trump administration to the city, branding the federal intervention an "unlawful" and "serious breach of state sovereignty." Newsom, alongside Mayor Karen Bass, vehemently argues that the federal presence has exacerbated, rather than quelled, the protests ignited by recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations. Conversely, the Trump administration asserts that the National Guard, now numbering over 4,100 troops in the Los Angeles area after an additional 2,000 were authorized yesterday, is crucial for restoring "law and order" and protecting federal personnel against what they term "violent, insurrectionist mobs."
