The women, all removed under "zero tolerance" immigration policies between 2017-2020, argue their children's deteriorating conditions require maternal care unavailable in their home countries of Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico. "My 8-year-old asks why Mommy can't hold her during chemo," said Marisol Velásquez, deported in 2019 despite her daughter's leukemia diagnosis. Immigration hardliners oppose the measure, with former Trump advisor Stephen Miller calling it "a backdoor amnesty tactic." Health advocates note 73% of deported parents' citizen children have developed chronic stress disorders, per a Johns Hopkins study. The policy debate coincides with new ICE data showing 1,200 medical deportations of parents with critically ill children since 2021.
