The Trump administration has enacted a new executive order that grants the federal government direct authority over the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department and the deployment of the National Guard within the nation's capital, a move that has been met with immediate and fierce criticism. Signed on August 12, 2025, the order allows the Secretary of Homeland Security to activate the National Guard without a request from local D.C. officials, citing a surge in crime and the need to protect federal institutions. The directive also establishes a joint command structure for federal and local law enforcement during periods of "public disorder," a policy that D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has condemned as an unconstitutional power grab. In a statement to reporters, Bowser declared, "This is an assault on our city’s limited home rule and an attempt to militarize our streets. The D.C. government has the capacity to manage its own security, and we will not cede our authority to the whims of the federal government." However, a senior administration official defended the order, stating it was a necessary step to restore "law and order" to a city where, they claimed, local officials have failed to curb violence.
