Israel Expands Gaza Evacuation Orders Amid Intensified Military Operations

The Israeli military has issued new evacuation orders for areas of central Gaza, including parts of Deir al-Balah, a region that had previously been a relative haven for displaced Palestinians, signaling an expansion of ground operations into previously untouched areas. This latest directive, delivered via leaflets dropped from Israeli Air Force planes, instructs residents, including those sheltering in tents, to move south towards the al-Mawasi humanitarian zone, a desolate coastal strip with minimal infrastructure. The move, announced as ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas remain stalled in Qatar, is intended to pressure Hamas in negotiations, according to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has repeatedly asserted this strategy. The expansion of operations comes amid a deepening humanitarian crisis, with at least 85 Palestinians reportedly killed while seeking aid at various distribution sites across Gaza on July 20, bringing the total casualties to over 58,800 since the conflict began in October 2023, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry. The United Nations and other humanitarian organizations are expressing grave concerns, with the UN clarifying whether their facilities in Deir al-Balah are covered by the new orders, and the Hostages Family Forum in Israel condemning the expanded offensive, demanding clarification on its plan and impact on the remaining hostages.
