Former U.S. President Donald Trump has offered to broker direct negotiations between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leaders to end the ongoing war, during a surprise announcement at a campaign rally in Michigan on Sunday. The proposal, which Trump claimed could produce a ceasefire "within 24 hours," was immediately met with skepticism from European allies, with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stating that "any peace process must respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity." The offer comes as EU foreign ministers convened in Brussels to approve a $54 billion military aid package for Kyiv, the largest since the conflict began in 2022. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy cautiously welcomed outside mediation but reiterated that negotiations cannot proceed while Russian troops occupy Ukrainian territory. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Moscow would "consider all serious proposals," though analysts note Russia has previously rejected third-party involvement. The development has exposed growing transatlantic divisions, with French President Emmanuel Macron warning against "backchannel deals that compromise European security." Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized that Washington’s official position remains unchanged: any peace agreement must be "just and durable."
