A 42-year-old man has been charged with four counts of second-degree murder in connection with the deadly stabbings at a Vancouver Filipino community event last week, police announced Sunday. The suspect, whose name has not been released pending further investigation, allegedly attacked attendees during the Lapu-Lapu cultural celebration at a local community center on April 22, leaving four dead and seven injured. Victims ranged in age from 19 to 64, with community leaders identifying all as members of Vancouver's Filipino-Canadian population. "This was a targeted act of violence that has devastated our tight-knit community," said Maria Santos, president of the Filipino Cultural Association of British Columbia. Court documents reveal the accused had a history of mental health issues but no prior violent offenses. The case has reignited calls for improved security at cultural gatherings and better mental health support systems. Vancouver Police Chief Constable Adam Palmer confirmed the suspect was known to police and had been released from a psychiatric facility weeks before the attack.
