Three people died and at least 12 others were hospitalized following a suspected toxic drug poisoning incident at Vancouver's annual Commercial Drive Street Festival on Sunday afternoon. Vancouver Coastal Health confirmed the victims, aged between 19 and 45, showed symptoms consistent with fentanyl contamination. The festival, which attracted approximately 20,000 attendees, continued under increased police presence while emergency teams established an on-site medical triage center. "This is another heartbreaking reminder of the toxic drug crisis gripping our communities," said Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim, who pledged additional funding for drug checking services at public events. Preliminary tests revealed the substances contained carfentanil, an opioid 100 times more potent than fentanyl. Health officials warned festival-goers to avoid non-prescription drugs while activists distributed naloxone kits along the festival route. The incident marks the third mass overdose event at a Vancouver public gathering this year.
