Pierre Poilievre's Conservative Party secured a minority government in Canada's snap federal election, winning 158 seats but falling short of a majority as Mark Carney's centrist Progressive Canadian Party captured an unprecedented 42 seats in Monday's vote. The results fractured Canada's political landscape, reducing the Liberals to 85 seats – their worst showing since 2004 – while the NDP retained 32 seats. "Canadians have rejected the radical left but want checks on conservative excess," Poilievre told supporters in Ottawa, pledging immediate tax cuts and expanded oil exports. Former Bank of Canada governor Carney declared his party's surprise performance "the birth of a pragmatic alternative," having drawn votes from both traditional parties. Analysts attribute the Conservative shortfall to backlash against Poilievre's climate policy rollbacks, particularly in Quebec where the party lost 12 target seats. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau conceded after nine years in power, announcing he would step down as Liberal leader following the party's historic defeat.
