The group’s manifesto, obtained by reporters, demands restoration of the Latin Mass and a return to “pre-Vatican II orthodoxy.” Meanwhile, reformist Cardinal Matteo Zuppi of Bologna is building transatlantic support for a moderate succession, telling German bishops last week that “the church cannot retreat into medievalism.” With the 87-year-old Francis increasingly frail, Vatican analysts predict the most contentious papal transition in 600 years—since the Western Schism divided Christendom.
